If you are running your own business as a taxi driver and you are a sole trader, you will undoubtedly be well aware that if you are unable to drive your taxi then your income from this source will come to a halt. Therefore we are sure that you will agree it is of vital importance that you do not break the speed limit whilst either driving your taxi for business purposes or do so whilst driving a car for personal use. If you are caught breaking the speed limit you may end up with points on your driving license and be fined.

You may find it of interest to read that the minimum fine is £100 and to have 3 penalty points added to your driving license unless you are given the opportunity to attend a speed awareness course. However, it is worth noting that if you accrue 12 penalty points or more on your driving license within a 3-year period then you may be banned from driving for a period of time. If that were to happen then it will mean you are unable to conduct your sole trader business as a taxi driver unless you can bring in and employ a taxi driver.

It is also worth noting that the number of penalty points added to your driving license and the amount you are fined will depend upon the speed limit in the location you were caught breaking that limit and the speed you were travelling at. The amount of the fine is normally a percentage of your weekly income with a maximum of £1,000 although if you were caught speeding on the motorway the fine could be as much as £2,500. You could also have your driving license suspended or be disqualified from driving.

If you happen to be caught speeding within 2 years of passing your driving test then your driving license will be withdrawn if you accrue 6 penalty points or more.

So, do be careful when out on the roads in your taxi and make sure that you keep within the speed limit at all times.
