As a taxi driver, you will know that it is a legal requirement here in the UK to make sure that your vehicle has suitable insurance cover. The exception to this would be if you had declared the vehicle SORN that stands for Statutory Off Road Notification and make sure that the vehicle is not on a public road.

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) has recently published some interesting statistics relating to which areas of the UK contain the most uninsured drivers.

Apparently, this year so far, in excess of 100,000 drivers have seen their vehicles seized by the authorities. Furthermore, about 33% of those vehicles have been crushed.

The top 5 areas by postcode for the number of uninsured drivers in the UK are as follows: –

1. Leeds LS1
2. Bristol BS1
3. Salford M3
4. Manchester M8
5. Birmingham B10

Another worrying statistic produced by MIB reveals that uninsured motorists or hit and run drivers hit someone every 20 minutes here in the UK.

The penalty for not insuring your motor vehicle is a fine of £300, 6 points on your driving license and you could have your vehicle seized and/or even crushed. You could also end up in court and receive an unlimited driving ban and fine.

We are sure that you will agree, the above figures are concerning.

Another interesting statistic is that uninsured drivers are, on average, adding an extra £53 per annum to the cost of someone’s car insurance premium here in the UK. You may be aware that car insurance premiums have never been as high as they were in the 3rd quarter of 2023 according to the Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index.
